Comments from Durham County Councillor Mark Wilkes (Lib Dem, Framwellgate & Newton Hall).
“At our last Economy and Enterprise scrutiny meeting I raised specific concerns that the governments discretionary business grant scheme was underspent by 50% in County Durham.
“I also mentioned that there were many businesses not getting the help that they needed. These are issues we have been raising for several weeks.
“I am delighted to see that the council has taken onboard many of these concerns and now extended the scheme. This will help a lot of local businesses, including many children’s nurseries which were not getting any help – something we specifically raised concerns about.”
Cllr Craig Martin adds, “This is a significant positive change in policy and we wholeheartedly thank Durham County Council for listening to us.
“There are still concerns about those businesses with a rateable value over £51k which have not see any grant help. Some of these businesses are small family owned concerns with single sites.
“Given the fast timescales, we urge the council to further adapt the scheme to help those businesses too, if any funding is left over. “Leave a comment
